The Gardiners Story

In 1942, George Gardiner started a small radio repair shop located on Polk Street in Baltimore City. After World War II, he expanded his operations by building a new facility to sell and service brand name major appliances to the myriad of new post-war households in the city and newly emerging suburbs.

In 1963, Mr. Gardiner purchased a piece of property in Towson selling appliances, stereo consoles and residential home furnishings.. The 1970’s brought on plenty of change, including a total of 35,000 sq. ft. of additions. In 1976, a 19,000 sq. ft. addition doubled the size of the showroom and added much needed warehouse space. Then, in 1976, an additional 8,000 sq. ft. was added to both the showroom and the warehouse.

The 1980’s brought more growth and change for the company. In 1989, Gardiners acquired Town & Country Furniture and opened two additional locations in Westminster and in Eastern Baltimore County. The Baltimore County location was sold in 1991 in favor of a larger facility located on Route 40 West in Catonsville. This location has a warehouse area, which is now the primary storage site for upholstery.

January 1997 brought more changes for Gardiners. The Distribution Center is now located on 162,000 sq. ft. at 4241 Brookhill Road and houses the majority of our inventory, as well as corporate, service, advertising and merchandising offices.

To finish out the 90’s, Gardiners added a location in the rapidly growing Harford County area, behind the Harford Mall. The 24,600 sq. ft. showroom opened in 1999 and featured all of the companies best sellers. Due to the population growth in this area, we knew it was only a matter of time before we would have to expand this location.

The new millennium brought even more changes for Gardiners. In 2001, Gardiners closed its old downtown Westminster store and opened a new 40,000 sq. ft. showroom on Rt. 140. This state of the art facility serves the rapidly expanding Westminster market, as well as all points to the south and west.

In 2002, Gardiners opened its fifth showroom south of Baltimore in Pasadena. This 65,000 sq. ft. facility, located in the Pasadena Crossroads Shopping Center, contains hundreds of beautifully displayed rooms and vignettes. The opening of this large facility meant that the assortment of merchandise now carried by Gardiners was among the most comprehensive in the central Maryland area.

By early 2004, it was becoming evident that the 25,000 sq. ft. Bel Air, showroom was too small to show the proper assortment of product necessary to service the expanding Harford County market. In 2005, Gardiners acquired a 75,000 sq. ft. former Ames store in Churchville, Maryland, just five miles northeast of Bel Air.In January 2006, the new flagship superstore opened to much fanfare and instantly became northeast Maryland’s destination for home furnishings.
